Round 1 Fr. Meachair Cup Qualifier
TCD (2-06) v IT Carlow (1-04)
The Institute of Technology Carlow GAA facilities were in immaculate condition for the 1st
round of the Fr. Meachair Cup qualifiers between Trinity College Dublin and IT Carlow. The hosts
got off to a blistering start and went ahead with well-orchestrated scores form organised team
play. It was a free-flowing game from the start witnessing few stoppages and quick one touch of
the ball Camogie providing an exhibition that was riveted spectators. With either team not giving
an inch to the other fitness and hard work were characteristics displayed by both on and off the
ball. The midfielders patrolled the mid-section of the pitch with Aine Murphy picking up the loose
players on defence and Sarah Cotter making intelligent runs into space in anticipation of a pass. In
the forwards Jade Carey skilfully rounder her player on a number of occasions and scored a point
on the run from her left that inspired the other players around her. An opportunistic goal from a 45
in the first half allowed TCD some room to breathe as the half time whistle sounded.
As the second half came to life the Carlow forwards constructed wave after wave of attacks
on the TCD backline and on a number of occasions getting close to goals but narrowly missing.
Two frees awarded to TCD in the latter stages of the second half settled the nerves and allowed
them to concentrate on a defensive performance witnessed throughout the field reminiscent of
the hard working character of the team this season. In the dying stages Aoife Mc Loughlin, Ciara
Kelly and Emma Gillen in the full back line and in goal stood up to the barrage of attacks from
Carlow. In the final stages of the match IT Carlow gave everything they had and were very
misfortunate not to get a few goals in the dying minuets. It was down to the collective team
performance of the TCD team that allowed them victory and progression to round 2 of the Fr.
Meachair Cup.
