NUI Maynooth v DIT, Maynooth 7.30pm Thursday 2nd Feb 2011.
Played in artic like conditions, NUI Maynooth and DIT served up a great game to keep the small crowd in attendance on their toes for the full 60 mins. The early exchanges were tough as both teams tried to physically impose themselves on the opposition. Points were exchanged at each end from all angles early on before a Carol-Ann Canning shot dipped perfectly into the top right hand corner to give DIT their first green flag of the night. The freetakers from both sides Naughton (DIT) and Walsh (NUIM) exchanged a further 2 points each to leave DIT with a three point cushion at half time 1-05 0-05.
The second half started at a frantic pace as both sides were keen to gain the upper hand, superb points from DIT's Paula McGrath and Michelle Kelly were followed by a response from Maynooths Catherine Walsh. The superb running of DIT's half back line was causing all sorts of problems for the Maynooth rearguard and on 47 mins this paid dividends when Michelle Kelly crashed the ball to the net after some fine build up play from both Lizzie McSweeney and Niamh Byrne. A healthy 5 point cushion entering the final few minutes should have seen DIT stroll to victory but a late rally from Maynooth was rewarded with a goal after clever work from Coffey and Walsh. Two points entering the final two minutes is a dangerous lead but DIT's greater resolve and spirit seen them pick off two points in the closing stages to register a four point win. Best for DIT were Grainne Quinn, Lizzie McSweeney and Michelle Kelly, while Sarah King, Clare Coffey and Louise Walsh fought credibly for Maynooth.
Final Score, NUI Maynooth 1-09 DIT 2-10
